Shtandart - 300 Years - Saint-Petersburg |
Life is what we make it ! |
The young Tsar Peter had a vision of a New Russia. One of his dreams was about seaport open for all countries. St.Petersburg has became such "window in Europe". Russia was in need for a new ships to the Baltic Sea. Since he wished to encourage links with other European countries and also learn more about the shipbuilding techniques and other technologies of the day, Tsar Peter the Great traveled to Holland and Britain in 1697 on a 'Great Embassy'. As a result of that visit, Peter himself designed and later captained the frigate Shtandart which was launched in 1703. The ship was named after the new royal flag which was designed after Russia gained access to the Baltic Sea. Tsar Peter loved te ship and issued a decree that it should be preserved for ever. Alas, after his death Shtandart was found to be beyond repair and was broken up in 1728. No Russian ship has survived from the 17th and 18th centuries and in 1994 a group of enthusiasts led by Captain Vladimir Martous came together in St.Petersburg to build a new Shtandart, a full-size and faithful replica of the original which held a special place in Russian naval history. The replica Shtandart was launched on 4 September 1999. Shtandart was reborn - a symbol of St.Petersburg, a tribute to the efforts of the young people who built and sail in her. Shtandart is a real working ship, welcoming as trainees young men and women from all countries to sail on her voyages around Europe, experiencing the life of 18th century frigate and developing new skills, self-reliance and personal values. |
In Shtandart Project, the dream of Peter the Great for a better Russia, sails forward... |
